The Medill School of Journalism rose before me like a temple to ambition, its red brick facade gleaming with the false promise of objectivity. I stood at the base of the steps, my messenger bag heavy against my shoulder, the revised manuscript pressing against my ribs like a second heartbeat. The morning light caught the windows of the upper floors, turning them into mirrors that reflected everything except what lay inside.
